In today’s world I believe every household needs to be prepared for anything. Between extreme weather events, economic uncertainty, and world instability — a power outage or emergency can happen to ANY family at ANY time without warning.

I personally prepare for at least 72 hours — and recommend everyone start there. Not everyone has space to stockpile for weeks and that is completely okay — 72 hours is the most critical window during any emergency

Today I am sharing exactly what I keep on hand for my household and our community cats— so that no matter what happens outside our front door we can stay calm, safe and as comfortable as possible until things get back to normal.

Must Have Emergency Supplies For Your Home

1. 💧 Water — Your Most Critical Supply

I keep a minimum of 4 cases of bottled water on hand at all times — and I always recommend having more rather than less. You never know how many people you may need to provide for during an emergency!

Pro tip: The general rule is one gallon of water per person per day — for two people for two weeks that is 14 gallons minimum.

Budget win: Stock up when water goes on sale and rotate your supply regularly so nothing expires.

2. 🚰 Brita Filtered Water Bottles — A Game Changer

This is one of my most important emergency investments and one most people overlook. I have purchased a Brita filtered water bottle for every person in my household.

Here is why this matters — in a serious emergency tap water may become unsafe to drink. A Brita filtered water bottle allows you to filter water from almost any source and make it safe to drink.

Money saving tip: The replacement filters come in a pack of 6 on Amazon for a very affordable price and each filter lasts about 2 months — meaning one pack lasts your entire household a full year!

3. 🔦 Battery Operated Lanterns

Candles are great but battery operated lanterns are safer and more practical for everyday emergency use — especially if you have pets or children. They provide consistent bright light without fire risk and can illuminate an entire room.

My recommendation: Keep at least 2-3 lanterns and always have extra batteries stocked and ready. I buy batteries in bulk so we never run out!

4. 🕯️ Long Burning Candles and Matches

While lanterns are my primary light source I also keep 24 hour burning candles and matches on hand as backup. There is also something calming about candlelight during a stressful situation that helps keep the household feeling peaceful.

Safety tip: Never leave candles unattended and keep them away from pets and children!

5. 📻 Hand Crank Emergency Radio

This is one of the most underrated emergency items you can own — and one of the cheapest! A hand crank radio requires NO batteries and NO electricity — you simply crank it by hand to generate power and tune into emergency broadcasts.

During a serious emergency this may be your only source of real time information about what is happening in your area — and they are surprisingly affordable on Amazon!

6. 🍳 Portable Sterno Stove

How do you cook when the power is out? This is where most people get stuck — and where a portable Sterno stove becomes absolutely invaluable.

Sterno cans are small fuel cans that create a safe controlled flame for heating food and water. They are inexpensive, widely available and work with a simple portable stove frame that costs very little.

Important: Always use Sterno in a well ventilated area — never in a completely sealed room.

7. 🥫 Canned Goods and Non Perishable Food

Stock your pantry with enough canned goods and non perishable foods to feed your household for at least two weeks. Focus on foods your family actually enjoys eating — emergency preparedness does not mean suffering through food you hate!

My strategy:

Canned soups and stews — easy to heat with Sterno
Canned beans and vegetables
Peanut butter and crackers
Dried fruits and nuts
Granola bars and protein bars
Instant oatmeal

Budget tip: Add a few extra canned goods to your cart every grocery run — within a few months you will have a solid two week supply without feeling the financial hit all at once!

8. 🔋 Portable Power Station

A portable power station is one of the best investments you can make for emergency preparedness. It allows you to charge phones, run small appliances and keep essential devices powered without electricity or a gas generator.

They range in price from budget friendly to premium — but even an affordable model can keep your phones charged and a small fan running during an outage!

9. 📱 Backup Battery Charger For Cell Phone

Even before investing in a full power station make sure every person in your household has a portable backup battery charger for their cell phone.

During an emergency your phone is your lifeline — for calling for help, getting emergency alerts, and staying connected with family. A fully charged backup battery costs very little and could literally save your life!

10. 🏥 First Aid Supplies

Every home needs a well stocked first aid kit — but during an emergency it becomes even more critical. Make sure yours includes:

Bandages in multiple sizes
Antiseptic wipes and cream
Pain relievers
Any prescription medications — keep at least a 2 week extra supply if possible
Medical tape and gauze
Thermometer
Emergency contact numbers written on paper — not just stored in your phone!

11. 🌡️ Emergency Mylar Space Blankets

These are one of the most impressive emergency items available for the price. Emergency Mylar space blankets look like thin silver sheets but they retain up to 90% of your body heat — keeping you warm even in very cold conditions.

I keep two per person in our household — they take up almost no space and weigh almost nothing but could be absolutely critical if we ever lose heat during a winter storm.

Budget win: You can get a pack of multiple space blankets for just a few dollars — one of the best emergency investments per dollar you can make!

12. 🐱 Do Not Forget Your Pets!!

Animals are family too — whether they are your own beloved pets or community animals that depend on you for care. During an emergency they cannot speak up for themselves so it is up to us to make sure they are prepared and protected!

Here is what I recommend keeping on hand for the animals in your life:

Dry cat food supply — at least a one week supply. During a serious emergency wet food may not be practical so dry food is your best backup
Bone broth for cats — this is my personal trick! I keep cat safe bone broth on hand that I can pour over dry food to add flavor and moisture — making it more appealing and keeping them hydrated even when wet food is not available
Extra water supply for pets — do not forget they need water too!
Pet first aid basics
Comfort items — a favorite toy or blanket helps keep pets calm during stressful situations

Remember: Your pets cannot tell you they are scared or thirsty — YOU are their voice and their protector during an emergency!

You do not have to buy everything at once! Here is a simple monthly plan:

Month 1: Water supply and Brita filtered bottles
