Since 2019, my fiancé and I have hosted guests through our Airbnb property here in Georgia — through every season, every kind of traveler, and even through COVID when safety became a whole new priority. Over the years, we’ve learned exactly what makes overnight guests feel genuinely comfortable versus just “taken care of.”

Why The Little Details Matter

Anyone can throw clean sheets on a bed. What actually makes guests feel cared for is thinking through their experience from the moment they walk in until they leave — do they have what they need without having to ask? Do they feel safe and comfortable, even in a space that isn’t their own?

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to with every guest who stays with us — and it’s the standard behind this checklist.

The Guest Room Ready Checklist

Bedding & Comfort

Clean sheets and pillowcases
Extra blanket, folded at the foot of the bed
Two pillow options — firm and soft, since everyone sleeps differently
Nightlight

Bathroom Essentials

Fresh towels and washcloths
Travel-size toiletries, in case they forgot something
Extra toilet paper, visible and accessible
A new bar of soap or body wash

Little Touches

A charging port or outlet easily accessible, since everyone has different phone types and cables
A clean robe in the closet
Iron, ironing board, and hangers in the closet
A dirty linen hamper for their use during the stay
Clear space in the closet or a drawer for their belongings
WiFi password written down and easy to find

Safety & Emergency Prep

An emergency flashlight kept under the TV stand
Mask and rubber gloves available — something we added after COVID to help every guest feel genuinely safe
First aid kit accessible in the bathroom, under the sink

Note: We keep water and refreshments available in our common area rather than the guest room itself — something to consider based on your own home’s layout.

Before They Arrive

Vacuum or tidy the room
Open windows to air out the space
Empty the trash can
Check that all lighting works properly
